Cocktails & Culture: The Danger of a Vineyard Romance With Erica Hannickel

  • The Spot 116 N 14th Ave E Ashland, WI, 54806 United States

Wine-soaked romance in northern California and on other regional wine trails: what could be better? The American vineyard romance genre was coined by one of the 19th century’s most famous authors, James Fennimore Cooper, an author better known for his creation of classic frontier cowboys-and-Indians novels. Although thought of as innocent fun in much contemporary fiction and film, several stories in the vineyard romance genre still rely upon these 200-year-old racist tropes to ensure white interests keep their families’ “rightful” land and preserve their ”elite” bloodlines. Come enjoy a glass of vino with Professor Erica Hannickel, author of "Empire of Vines," shows clips from "Sideways: and "Bottleshock," and talks about the deeper history of wine fiction in the United States.
